Our Partnership

Salar Salmon & D.MacGillivray & Co Est 1941 have come together to bring you ‘The Hebrides’. A partnership of two family run local businesses, dating as far back as 1941, offering you the opportunity to see the beauty and taste the locally produced delicacies of our Islands in beautiful luxury hampers & gifts

Salar Salmon
Originally known as Salar Smokehouse, the South Uist-based operation ceased production in April after its previous owners, salmon farmer Loch Duart, struggled to find a buyer for the business, which it had owned since 2008.

The new owner Iain MacRury, previously the production manager on the site, will now run the new business as Salar Smokehouse supported by six members of staff.

Native Hebridean MacRury pledged to bring a back-to-basics approach to the smokehouse, starting with its hot-smoked flaky salmon, which will be sold to retailers, restaurants and direct to consumers online.

D.MacGillivray & Co
In 1941 Donald & Effie MacGillivray formed Hebridean Cofter Weavers Ltd, eventually becoming D.MacGillivrays & Co, selling produce from local cottage industries in the Outer Hebrides. The company grew steadily and in 1981 Donald and Effie’s son Robert and his wife Katie joined the business with Donald continuing at the helm until he sadly passed away in 1990.

In 2007 the company entered it’s third generation with Robert and Katie’s son Rory and his wife Jacqui taking over the running of MacGillivrays.

MacGillivrays aims to continue providing unique, quality products with a Hebrides theme.
